  • THE IMPORTANCE OF PROFESSIONAL ATTIRE

“Dress shabbily and they remember the dress; dress impeccably and they remember the woman.” - Coco Chanel. This could not be more true. Your attire, especially in your professional life, can literally be a career game changer.

Lea Goldman, Special Features Editor for Marie Claire, has written and spoken about the importance of ‘Executive Presence.’ The three components that make up executive presence are communication, gravitas, and appearance.

That last one is a big one. According to Goldman, executives say appearance counts for 60 percent of your executive presence. The clothes you wear can literally impact your performance at work. People make snap decisions based on your appearance. The big areas where we often see women make mistakes are with their hair, their shoes, makeup, panty lines and their cleavage.

“The single biggest mistake women make [in work attire] is dressing too sexy,” said Goldman. According to a recent survey commissioned by Dragons’ Den entrepreneur Peter Jones, women who display too much cleavage at work could end up sabotaging their careers. The survey of 3,000 managers found that almost half of bosses had overlooked a woman for promotion if she had regularly worn low-cut tops to attract attention.

Heel height can also be a real problem area. It really depends on your work environment, but something you always want to keep in mind is that you have to be comfortable enough in your shoes so you don’t look ridiculous walking in them. This is something Sanida Carroll shoes make a priority. We produce comfortable heels for professional women.

One study found that your clothes may not only make you look less intelligent to your managers and coworkers, but they may actually be making you drop IQ points. The process is known as “enclothed cognition.” When it happens, individuals are mentally giving the clothing they’re wearing “symbolic meaning.”  According to Christina Binkley of The Wall Street Journal, “Clearly, clothes and accessories are powerful symbols in the workplace. They are seen before our words are heard in a board meeting, and they are remembered long after, like perfume that hangs in a room.”

Remember all this the next time you dress for a presentation or important meeting. It can literally bring your grade from a B+ to an A.
